All Info for 1-2 Weeks Old

Information is for the first two weeks of baby’s life.  I am in no way a doctor, medical professional, or even experienced in child care.  This is just information that I have gathered from books, websites, my pediatrician, and hearsay.  The time schedules and suggestion of eat/wake/sleep cycles are from Babywise.  The progression of development is from What to Expect the First Year.  Feeding amounts are the recommendations from my doctor.  Everything else is from various websites and friends.

Feeding/wake/sleeping:

  • 16 – 20 ounces in 24 hours (after milk comes in)
  • Wake time is not separate from feeding time
  • 8 – 10 feedings in 24 hours
    • No more than 5 hours in between
      • Don’t allow any more than one of these 5 hour stretches in 24 hours
    • No closer together than two hours
    • Below is an example schedule

1-2

By the end of 2 weeks, baby may be able to:

  • Lift head briefly when on tummy
  • Move arms and legs
  • Focus on objects 8 – 10 inches from her face

Activities you can do with baby:

  • Shake a rattle or other noise maker on either side of baby’s head

  • Make finger puppets and have conversations with baby
  • Baby massage
  • Rub objects of various textures on baby’s bare tummy
  • Mimick any baby noises back to baby.  She will enjoy the conversation in her language.
  • Slowly move a rattle or a black and white picture in an arc 6-8 inches in front of baby’s face.  This will encourage head turning.

  • Help baby move her limbs.  Stretch arms out, help straighten fingers, stretch out legs, etc.
  • Finger Dinosaur
